Types Of Music Programs

Deciding on a music program can be challenging because not every university offers the same music programs. There are different styles of music schools out there; some are focused on performance, while others are focused on academics.

Prospective students should decide what type of music experience they want and what career path they hope to follow; that will help determine which institution is the right fit.

Music Conservatory Schools

A music conservatory stand-alone school is focused on the performing arts. Music conservatories focus on professional training, so it might be the right choice for students who are strong performers that want to continue performing professionally after college. A conservatory might feel more intimate and focused than a traditional college campus. There is less focus on academic projects and more focus on performance. Most of them are smaller and have less than 1,000 students. Some examples of music conservatories include Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Cleveland Institute of Music.

Conservatory Style Schools

Conservatory style schools are similar in style to music conservatories but are connected to a university. This allows students the professional music experience, but they can also take advantage of more robust academic opportunities. Some examples of conservatory style schools include the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, and the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Conservatory style schools can offer a performing arts student the best of both worlds.

Schools Of Music

Schools of music are schools within universities (similar to schools of business or engineering). They blend performance with academics by offering a thorough music education in a real-world context. The schools of music provide the classic university experience and can offer dual academic major opportunities. University courses might focus on music's origin, history, and philosophy. They provide opportunities to play music and practice, but it’s not the sole focus of education.

Some examples of schools of music include the USC Thornton School of Music, the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Departments Of Music

Departments of music typically have fewer music offerings than the other types of programs above. There are academic classes and performance opportunities on campus, but it’s not as robust as a school of music. Some examples include the University of Florida, Cornell University, and Northeastern University.

All these paths can lead to becoming a music professional; take some time to think about the one that’s right for you. At Best College Consulting, we can talk you through the options and help you apply to the colleges that meet the education experience you desire.
